1. Backseat Skiing

Backseat skiing means leaning too far back as you go down the hill which is a wrong strategy. You should put the pressure on the front of your skis to control your speed, avoid jumps and avoid knee injuries. 2. Skiing and flailing arms have no match

Lazy and flailing arms can cause trouble for a skier especially when you make pole plant. Droopy arms won’t let your turns be smooth which will again increase the chances of injuries. The position of your arms helps you maintain balance and control so it is important to get rid of habits related to flailing arms.

  • Keep your hands out in front like you are pointing towards 10 and 2 o’clock.
  • The position of your hands should be in such a way that you can easily view your elbows without turning your head.
  • Remember that your elbows and shoulders should not swing but stay fixed.

3. Short Sight

The short sight has nothing to do with your eyesight. Here short sight refers to a situation when you look only at the turn you are making, rather than what’s coming next. This habit restricts you from observing the whole piste resulting in a situation where you are not prepared for that huge lump of snow in front of you as you weren’t looking out far enough ahead.

  • Look horizontally and avoid looking downward to gain more sight.
  • Be alert and focus on the obstacles that you might have to face and create a habit of quick decision making which is highly needed in a sport like skiing.

4. Using Your Shoulders to Turn

 A very annoying habit is when a skier turns with his/her shoulder. The skiing rules says to keep your upper body facing the fall line, regardless of what happens lower down. Turning with the help of your shoulders throws you off balance and requires a lot of energy. Moreover, it only works on groomed runs.

  • Hold your poles in your hands across you at chest height.
  • You need to have different strategies for both longer turns and medium turns. 

5. The habit of Avoiding Skiing Lessons

The ones who believe that training sessions are only for beginners are completely wrong. Yes, you don’t need a whole day with a trainer but you need a few hours with him daily. Training is the best warm-up you can get and the best way to polish your skills under someone’s guidance.

Avoiding skiing lessons may not cause you any major harm but you will surely notice the difference in you after the lesson.

  • Start your day with your instructor who can monitor your progress and give you feedback.
